Red Circle Mark - Crown Imperial Czecho-slovakia with swirly letters inside:- Appraisal Description: Haas & Czjzek (H & C) Schlaggenwald "Crown Imperial" Plate. Date: C.1920 - 1938
Mark Report & History:
This "Crown Imperial" mark is that of Haas & Czjzek of Horní Slavkov, Czech Republic, previously the town of Schlaggenwald, Bohemia, Austria. The name "Crown Imperial" pays homage to world renowned original Austrian maker Royal Vienna, but there is no connection. Your mark is post first world war and before 1938.
This "Crown Imperial" mark was most probably a special export mark for the US market - selling to stores such a Macy's. After WW2 the company was divided into two - Schlaggenwald ("S" mark) and Chodau ("C" mark).
An important Bohemian factory founded in 1792 by Johann Georg Paulus, Johann Poschl, and Johann Reumann, this factory has changed names several times as the ownership changed. Known in 1808 as Lippert & Haas, then Haas & Czjzek (H & C mark), then post WW2 was nationalized and divided into two units Schlaggenwald and Chodau.
Finally the Schlaggenwald company continued after 1992 becoming independent from the nationalized company and is still in operation today as Haas & Czjzek. Any marks form this period would not be marked as Czecho-slovakia or Czecho-slowakia or Czechoslovakia it would be "Czech Republic" or a variation thereof, because in January 1, 1993 Czechoslovakia became two separate countries the Ceská Republika (Czech Republic) and Slovák Republika (Slovak Republic).
